Saturday 10 July 2010    Tetrad Survey 2.00-6.00pm

Eight members of Shropshire Mammal Group members explored the Weir Coppice and Hook-a-Gate area, including parts of the Rea Brook, looking for mammal signs. Evidence of otter, badger, field vole, rabbit, mole, squirrel and possibly stoat were found before adjourning  to The New Inn for some hard-earned liquid refreshment on what had been a very interesting but rather hot afternoon. The evidence was all recorded and will be submitted to John Mackintosh, our County Mammal Recorder.
Many thanks to Clive Dean for organising the expedition.
Earlier in the day, committee members had manned a stand at the BTO garden birdwatch conference held at Shropshire Wildlife Trust.

 Records of Mammals

John Mackintosh would welcome records of mammals you may have seen in Shropshire.  Have you seen a Hare recently?  Or perhaps a Stoat has crossed your path.  These are very useful records and help build up a picture of where these animals are found in Shropshire and if their numbers are declining or on the increase.

You can use the 'Make a species record' form on this web site or email John direct. Remember to provide a minimum of:

Who - The name of the person who saw it and if someone else identified it, include their name.

What - The type of animal you have seen

Where - The name, and ideally the grid reference of the place you saw it (you can find a grid reference from the maps on this web site by zooming to where you saw the mammal then clicking on the map - it will start with either SJ or SO in Shropshire)

When - The date you saw it

The group has been set up to further the study of mammals in Shropshire and promote appropriate conservation measures. Most meetings of the group will be outdoor field visits and survey events but some indoor meetings are also scheduled.

Water Vole Identification

Not sure whether you have seen a water vole or not?

Water vole can be tricky to identify since you may only catch a fleeting glance even if you are lucky or there may only be foot prints, feeding sites or burrows to suggest presence.

There are resources available to help you if you are not quite sure whether you have seen a water vole or a brown rat, there are also training events run by the Whitchurch Community Water Vole Project should you wish to get involved in surveying for water voles in Shropshire.

Photographs of water vole and brown rat for comparison, examples of feeding stations, droppings and burrows are all available on the

Whitchuch Community Water Vole Project Website

Maps of sightings

Maps of where some mammals have been recorded in Shropshire are being made available from this web site.  These maps generally rely on volunteer recorders and members of the public sending records to John Macintosh.  If you have seen a wild mammal in Shropshire and can provide John with the details above please send this information to John at mackintosh@metronet.co.uk
