Recording Groups

To find out more about the species data presented here please visit the web site of the individual recording group involved or the Shropshire Wildlife Trust.  A list of recording groups can be found from the 'Recording Groups' section.  It should be stressed that the lists here are not detailed enough to be used to inform development decisions.  Please contact the Shropshire Wildlife Trust for such detailed records.

BAP species are those that are listed in either the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and/or the Shropshire Biodiversity Action Plan.  For a full list check the Shropshire BAP species section of this web site.  Environmental Stewardship awards more points (therefore funds) to land managers who consider BAP species.

Plant indicators and BAP species are plants that are indicative of good quality habitats.  Currently 375 species are listed.  They are all considered Shropshire BAP species.  For a full explaination please visit the Shropshire Botanical Society web site at http://shropshire.bsbi.org.uk/. To download the full list separated by BAP habitat check the 'Documents' section of this web site under Reference Documents or click HERE.

JCA species are those that are listed in the Joint Classification Area descriptions for Shropshire.  For a good description of what this means visit the Shropshire Ornithological Society web site at www.shropshirebirds.com or visit DEFRA's web site about JCA's at www.defra.gov.uk/erdp/schemes/jca-ts/default.htm. Environmental Stewardship awards more points (therefore funds) to land managers who consider JCA listed species.

For details on protected sites please visit our pages on Desigated Sites in Shropshire

Shropshire Council wishes to acknowledge the financial support of Natural England and the National Biodiversity Network for the development of the mapping tool.

About the map

Click the map to select a tetrad (2 x 2km square).  After a short wait a list of the data currently available for that square will be presented. Click the species group you are interested in for a list of the records plus the date it was last recorded in that square.

Under 'Layers' select a tick box to show the density of UK BAP species, Local BAP species or protected species found in each tetrad. The brighter the colour the greater the number of different species found.  The total number of different species in each group can also be found by clicking 'Species groups' in the Layers section.

These data are uploaded by the official county recorder for each group, or a representative on their behalf.  The accuracy of the data depends on what the county recorder has presented and in some cases only represents a few key species.  A list of those groups involved can be found on the 'Recording Groups' page.

The species records presented here are intended to flag up the presence of particular species in a given area. The data are not to be used for commercial species enquiries.  For more detailed records enquiries should be made to each of the groups involved.

Click 'Satellite' on the map to use satellite/aerial photos as the backdrop.  Use the ' + ' and ' - ' symbols to zoom in and zoom out.  Click and hold the map to move around or use the arrows.

Try zooming in very close and using the 'Hybrid' maps.
