About the Group

Volunteering is becoming increasingly vital to wildlife conservation in the UK, as many public and private sector conservation organisations are operating with considerably reduced resources. Nature is a subject that fascinates many people, but all too often nature interest groups do little to help conserve wildlife and the natural environment.

The Strettons Area Community Wildlife Group (SACWG) aims to change this and make a real contribution to local wildlife conservation by surveying and monitoring threatened species and habitats. The data collected by the SACWG is collated into an annual report, which will provide a number of conservation recommendations. This report is provided to important bodies such as Shropshire Council, Shropshire Wildlife Trust, Natural England and the National Trust.

The SACWG is run by the community for the community, with support from professional ecologists and local species experts. It was launched in February 2012, with support from the Shropshire Hills AONB LEADER programme. The group covers an area of 108 km2 around the Stretton hills and currently has over 70 members, who are helping to record and conserve wildlife in the Strettons area. It is all very exciting and new members are always welcomed.

Other helpful resources

The Natural History Museum's Open Air Laboratories project produced a guidance for basic hedgerow surveys. The SACWG approach is more detailed than this, but the OPAL hedgerow survey field guide does contain images demonstrating examples of the different types of management (heavy cut, leggy, coppice(hard copy not available at CMV).

If you spot something that your cannot identify try to get a photograph. Then you can either send it to the groups' mailing list strettonswildlife@gmail.com or you can put it on Ispot, which is an online community run by OPAL to help identify wildlife.
