  Records of Mammals

John Mackintosh would welcome records of mammals you may have seen in Shropshire.  Have you seen a Hare recently?  Or perhaps a Stoat has crossed your path.  These are very useful records and help build up a picture of where these animals are found in Shropshire and if their numbers are declining or on the increase.

You can use "Make a mammal record for Shropshire" or email John direct. Remember to provide a minimum of:

Who - The name of the person who saw it and if someone else identified it, include their name.

What - The type of animal you have seen

Where - The name, and ideally the grid reference of the place you saw it (you can find a grid reference from the maps on this web site by zooming to where you saw the mammal then clicking on the map - it will start with either SJ or SO in Shropshire)

When - The date you saw it

"Make a mammal record for Shropshire"

As at 4th Oct 2011,  387 records have been submitted

As at 25th July 2011,  355 records have been submitted.

Please keep them coming!

For a list of the number [and %] for each species click here

The group has been set up to further the study of mammals in Shropshire and promote appropriate conservation measures. Most meetings of the group will be outdoor field visits and survey events but some indoor meetings are also scheduled.

Water vole identification

Water Vole Identification

Not sure whether you have seen a water vole or not?

Water vole can be tricky to identify since you may only catch a fleeting glance even if you are lucky or there may only be foot prints, feeding sites or burrows to suggest presence.

There are resources available to help you if you are not quite sure whether you have seen a water vole or a brown rat, there are also training events run by the Whitchurch Community Water Vole Project should you wish to get involved in surveying for water voles in Shropshire.

Photographs of water vole and brown rat for comparison, examples of feeding stations, droppings and burrows are all available on the

Whitchuch Community Water Vole Project Website

Make a mammal record for Shropshire

Shropshire Mammal Group has embarked on the production of a mammal atlas for the county. We need all the records we can get, especially for the more common mammals which are currently very under-recorded. Just click here and you will go to a form in which you don't even have to type in the name of the mammal! The data will go directly into a spreadsheet which can be used by the Shropshire Mammal Recorder John Mackintosh.

Maps of sightings

Maps of where some mammals have been recorded in Shropshire are being made available from this web site.  These maps generally rely on volunteer recorders and members of the public sending records to John Macintosh.  If you have seen a wild mammal in Shropshire and can provide John with the details by clicking here.
